The process of evangelism

Michael Green has a lifetime of experience as a preacher and theologian. In Oxford he spent many years at St Aldate's, a large evangelical Anglican church with a vibrant academic and student congregation.

He speaks and writes clearly, making Sharing Your Faith a quick read. Implementing the process of evangelism described in the book will take longer.

I recommend this as a book to turn to again and again. The typeface is fresh like the writing in the book. This is Basic Evangelism 101 (or Tripos Part I) that Green sets forth in a postmodern context.

My main criticism of the book is that if you really have doubts about Christianity you will have a very difficult time getting rid of them by reading this book. Some people don't evangelize because they are not 100% convinced of Biblical truths or they don't really feel Christianity is essential to their lives.

Green's Facts may indeed be questionable for some skeptics. For example, the Fact of Design - "There is abundant evidence of intelligent design in our world. It is even more apparent in nature than in the artifacts that intelligent human beings design. Why? Because 'the heavens are telling the glory of God; and the firmament proclaims his handiwork' Psalm 19:1". I don't believe the majority of people think that the world is designed - some of it has evolved - some is the result of random events - some has geological causes.

Many could have written this book - but Green's wealth of experience from real world evangelism over decades, with leading intellectuals and bright minds, are what differentiate this book and make it worth reading.

Pray for lots of faith to benefit from this book. If you have it then you will find the book is full of pragmatic ideas for sharing the Christian gospel with friends, family and coworkers.

Each chapter has questions for discussion that would make this a fine book for a Bible Study or Christian discussion group. It is an excellent book for those leaving the cocoon of a university Christian fellowship and embarking on a career who are anxious to promote Christianity among their friends. It is also useful for those from non-Christian backgrounds who have become Christians and want to share their faiths with their relatives.

I wouldn't recommend this book for non-Christian book circles as it assumes too much belief in Christianity on the part of the reader.

This is classic Michael Green - popular Christian writing with an edge that urges you to action.

With the continued emphasis on the pharmacist's role as a 'first port of call' in response to symptoms, the need for effective communication and interpersonal skills remains paramount. This book provides the pharmacist with the appropriate techniques for gathering information to meet the needs of patient safety in a way that is acceptable to the public. Case studies and comments from the pharmacist's and doctor's perspective are included throughout.

This is now the fifth edition of Symptoms in the Pharmacy. The text has been fully revised to reflect the latest 'prescription only medicine' to 'pharmacy medicine' switches. Changes in medicine use, cautions and contraindications where recent evidence has shown new safety concerns are also covered. Similarly, where new evidence has shown treatments to be less effective and thus superseded, they have been removed.

This book is an excellent guide for either trainee or newly qualified pharmacists. It covers most ailments which may be encountered on a daily basis in the community pharmacy and describes features of more serious underlying disease to aid diagnosis or referral. It is well presented and clearly laid out with separate chapters for each ailment. At the end of each chapter are example case studies giving in summary both the view of a pharmacist and medical doctor for each condition. My only criticism is that there are no illustrations or diagrams which I feel would have been helpful when describing clinical features of some conditions. Nonetheless there are clear descriptions of each ailment, highlighting symptoms, possible causes and most appropriate treatments. Importantly it gives clear guidelines on when to refer presenting ailments to a doctor. It is comparable in style to the title Minor Illness or Major Disease, however this title is illustrated with photographs of illness to aid recognition. A useful guide for all student pharmacists, preregistration pharmacists and possibly newly qualified pharmacists.

REALISTIC SITUATIONS IN THE PHARMACY

This would make an excellent introduction to clinical community pharmacy for undergraduates and for ce programs for licensed pharmacists. The descriptions of typical presentations to the pharmacist by patients or clients, the pharmacist's response and a followup critique by an MD are well done. A followup revision would benefit from better organization of topics by organ system to facilitate location of information. Well designed decision trees would be a great help.

Incredibly timely topic addressed by a real expert

Finally! A book that addresses the sustainability implications behind design and technology platform choices that we make as marketers, designers and developers of digital marketing tools. I found the book comprehensive and eye-opening (e.g. if the internet were a country, it would be the sixth largest in terms of electricity use). I'm excited to try to apply some of these ideas into my own work and hope that making more sustainable design and development decisions becomes the norm for practitioners.

A Clarion Call

Designing for Sustainability is a must-read for designers and developers who care about the future of the planet - which, I assume is more than 90% of us! In clear terms, Tim illustrates for us how the web and the applications that power our digital, daily lives are also direct contributors to our warming planet.

Tim is able to use very technical terms and concepts in a way that a layperson can easily understand. (This is no easy task, as anyone who has helped an elder with a smartphone might attest.) At the same time, and throughout the book, Tim urges us to start thinking differently about our digital footprint, which is making up a larger and potentially catastrophic portion of of our carbon footprint.

Designing for Sustainability is much more than a book about design and sustainability. It is also a beautifully crafted clarion call to everyone who uses the web - currently standing at 3.5 billion people - to begin a conversation about how our adaptation of digital products is adversely impacting our climate and our environment. (Full disclosure: I was one of the many people Tim interviewed during the making of this book.) I hope you’ll consider devouring this book.

Interesting to people who think and teach about sustainability, even to non-IT, non-CS, non-business people.

This book is not aimed at someone like me. I teach about sustainability issues in a social science and policy frame. I have no competence--and probably even less interest--in digital product and service design.

But I do have students who do have interests and competence in IT, CS, and business as well as interests in sustainability more broadly. And three things seem clearly true: First, there are discussions (and portions of chapters) in this book that will help me speak with these students in a language they speak, about projects they may be undertaking. Second, there are portions of chapters that I can use, or draw upon, in the classroom. Third, I think that both the students (in IT, CS, and business) and I will see that we have more in come than we think.

Though some of the finer points and larger meaning of the book flew past me some of the time, I found the book interesting and readable. And didactically useful.

In the world of Damascus steel, Manfred Sachse is the man. This 2008 printing of the 3rd edition of Damascus steel has 2 more chapters than the 1993 printing. If you're sitting on the fence in considering which edition to purchase, get this one. It has a glossy photo cover vs blue cloth. Kelee Meditation: Simple Serenity

I have been practicing the Kelee meditation for a few years and have found it to be the most effective, efficient and user friendly form of meditation. I first came to meditation via the mindfulness route when looking for ways to deal with migraines. However, what I have found with the Kelee method is that it is the succinct form of meditation in which one learns to do the opposite of mindfulness, and not think. Rather relax into a state without thoughts for a shorter period of time, but consistently and the results are forthcoming as one's practice progresses. By utilizing the three P"s: practice, patience, and persistance I have experienced improvement with my migraines and beyond that a calmer, clearer perspective of life itself. Ten minutes twice a day is doable and sustainable while other more lengthy forms of mediation may be beneficial, they generally are not able to be maintained for the long haul and actually miss the point of getting out of one's head and thoughts entirely. Kelee meditation is simple, successful, serene.

Deep and simple

I have been studying the Kelee via Meditation for over 6 years, with profound results. I came across it as an elite coach in 2006, with one of my athletes, who studies with Ron, introducing it to me. Like any great teacher, everything Ron teaches leads you inwardly, so you can see for yourself, not only what you are looking for, but what may be blocking you. His clarity on the subject of the mind and meditation means he doesn't waste any words in his books. I think there is enough confusion on the subject of the mind and spirituality and it's great to learn from someone that knows. If you want to learn about your mind and a simple meditation technique that works, this is a great way to start. I strongly recommend his other books too, which dive deeper into the subject of the mind, without ever compromising his clarity and simplicity. Matt:)

About the Author
Robert Webster FGA was originally in the jewellery and pawnbroking trade, and won the Fellowship Diploma of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain with distinction in 1934. In 1946 the same association awarded him their coveted Research Diploma and in that year he joined London Gem Testing Laboratory, then in Hatton Garden, where he remained until he retired in 1971. He was a noted lecturer in various London colleges for decades and an honorary visiting lecturer to the Detective Training School of the London Police. He travelled widely, lecturing, visiting gem laboratories and mining and cutting centres in many parts of the world.
