This serves a a superb reference book for people who have dealings with Paleontology who are not professionals. The details on faunal morphology are very good for such an abbreviated work. This author is often quoted in other works.

A Comprehensive Treatment of a Fascinating Field of Study

Dr. Clarkson presents a detailed and informative summary of all major aspects of invertebrate evolution. The book is organized in a step-wise fashion that introduces the reader to the main principles of the field of paleontology (including genetics, populations and micro- and macroevolution) and then moves into detailed descriptions of the various invertebrate phyla. Be aware that this is not your typical coffee table book; rather, it is written at a level best appreciated by those with a biological background or by introductory students in this field. Descriptions are appropriately detailed and concise and are accompanied by a wealth of similarly detailed drawings and images. I particularly enjoyed his chapters on molluscs, echinoderms and crinoids. It is a valuable accompaniment to other books that have been written on the Burgess Shale and early forms of non-vertebrate life. Both the armchair paleontologist and the professional will find this to be a most valuable addition to his or her collection of books on this wonderfully diverse group of ancient animals.

If you still think cholesterol causes heart disease, this book's for you.

Have you taken meat & eggs out of your diet? Are you still trying to limit saturated fat to less than 10% of your total calories? Are you popping statins to keep that cholesterol level below the maximum de jure? How about some pills for that hypertension? Do you need more little brown bottles sitting on the bathroom vanity? Don't be fooled by the title of this book. Scott Deron takes the politically correct route through the "cholesterol & saturated fat" minefield, choosing dogma over science at every turn. Where's the new information about CRP in this book? Eighty percent of this book is a rehash of the same bromides we've been swallowing for 30 years. Cardiovascular disease, meanwhile, has continued to climb unabated. If you're looking for the root cause of cardiovascular disease, you won't find it in this book. If you're looking for interventions that split with the already-disproved AMA/AHA doctrine, you won't find that here either. Do yourself a favor. Use your money to buy Colpo's "The Great Cholesterol Con", McCully's "The Heart Revolution" or Francis' "Never Be Sick Again". Your heart will love you for it.

The High Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein blood test is a predictor of future heart attack and stroke

If your High Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein Blood Test is over 3, you are in serious danger of a heart attack or stroke. My test was 11.4 and after taking 4 to 6 grams of L-Arginine, 40 mg of Zocor and walking 3 to 4 miles each of 3 to 4 days a week, it decreased to 5.96 in 6 weeks.
I kept at it and in another 6 weeks, it was down to 1.79, so it was under the threshold danger level. I was made aware of a risk of a big potential problem with this test and it was in time to do something about it. A previous test of C-Reactive Protein was not high, but the "High Sensitivity" or "HS" C-Reactive Protein Test is a much better measure of inflamation in the artery and coronary vessel walls.
I think some doctors are very jaded about research and slow to buy into the latest tests and research because they have so many drug salesmen coming to their offices each day. Doctors need to order this test as a matter of routine.
Thank goodness for the ladies in the church's prayer group that started praying for me when I learned I had a problem from a EBT Heart Scan, which resulted in getting the blood test and finding the information to get it under control.

Second rate: not useful, politically correct

The review by Konrath 'nails' it. Rehash, politically correct but nothing very useful. He suggests 'a daily fortified cereal' [rather than a multivitamin for your vitamin intake on page 40], he suggests wrongly that olive oil is "an excellent source of omega-3" [it has none] while suggesting on page 92 that people who take statins have a 33% reduced risk of diabetes. Even his reference, Dr. Ridker, has said in print that statins probably "as a class effect" PROMOTE diabetes [versus a placebo pill] while, indeed they lower CRP.

The JUPITER study he refers to had not been completed but we now know that for example in women the ONLY thing that reached statistical benefit were non life-saving interventions. Moreover, in nobody was the CRP and cholesterol reducing Crestor [rosuvastatin] a cardiovascular mortality benefit. Promoting the reduction of cholesterol and CRP is the underlying concept of this book but the one drug in which that concept was investigated saved nobody from heart disease [12 fatal heart attacks + strokes in both the Crestor and placebo groups]. This book needs a bypass. The McCully book The Heart Revolution cited by Konrath is the better choice.

An amazing book!

Roman Woodworking by Roger B. Ulrich is a comprehensive and fascinating work on Roman woodworking, aimed at classicists, historians, and modern woodworkers. However, it is a great source too for ordinary folk with an enquiring mind and interested in the Ancient Roman world. And fiction writers looking for background information should take note.

The book is written in an easy prose, and the illustrations are photographs from museums and other institutions as well as models and drawings by the author himself, plus the occasional chart or table. There are in all 205 black & white illustrations. The 400-page figure is deceptive, as the book is printed in the rather narrow Quadraat font, which takes a bit of adjustment to aging eyes.

The author draws heavily on ancient historians, among them Pliny's Natural History, Vitruvius' On Architecture, Isidore's Origins, Strabo's Geography, and Cato's de re rustica. Archaeological data include tools of all imaginable kinds, other artifacts, paintings from Herculaneum, scenes from Trajan's Column, the latter frequently referenced, and even a gilt decorated glass vessel in the Vatican Museum; and dedicatory and funerary monuments, which show many tools and working scenes. The paintings and the Column present mainly architectural structures, but not exclusively. In addition, Mr. Ulrich references a number of modern authors, beginning with Technologie und Terminologie der Gewerbe und K�nste bei Griechen und R�mern (Hugo Bl�mner, 1884). Until now, this topic had been mainly addressed by European scholars.

he cross-referenced Glossary of Roman Woodworking Terms, set in small font type, takes up 67 pages. There is also an Appendix: Archaeological Evidence of Roman Woodworking Tools, and of course a bibliography.

Remember that your schooling has taught you most of what you need to know to pass the CSET: English exam. The education classes you took provided the background to make important decisions about situations you will face as a teacher. This review is designed to help you fit the information you have acquired into specific domain components. Studying your class notes, textbooks, and other sources together with this review will give you an excellent foundation for passing the CSET: English exam.

About the REA Study Center

To personalize your study plan, you should first get feedback on what you know and what you don’t know. At the online REA Study Center (www.rea.com/studycenter), you will find two full-length practice tests for each subtest, along with detailed score reports that will pinpoint your strengths and weaknesses.

Before you begin to study the review chapters in this book, take Practice Test 1 as a diagnostic test. Armed with the information from your score reports, focus your study on the parts of the book where you need the most review.

After studying the review chapters, go back to the REA Study Center and take Practice Test 2 for each subtest. This will ensure that you have mastered the material and are ready for test day.

If you are studying for the CSET: English test and don’t have Internet access, you can take the printed tests in this book. The correct answers for the test items can be found at the end of each subtest. These printed tests are the same as the online practice tests offered at the REA Study Center, but without the added benefits of timed testing conditions and diagnostic score reports. When taking a printed test, you are encouraged to simulate the test environment as closely as possible.

AN OVERVIEW OF THE TEST

What’s on the CSET: English Test?

The CSET: English test assesses your ability to meet the basic skills requirement and subject matter competence as set out in the California Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy. The test combines the expertise of California educators, subject area specialists, and district-level educators, all of whom worked to develop and validate the exam. The CSET: English test is criterion-referenced, which means it is designed to measure your knowledge and skills against an established standard and not in relation to the performance of others taking the test.

CSET: English consists of four separate subtests, each scored separately and composed of either multiple-choice or constructed-response questions. If you choose to take all four subtests in a single session, you are given 5 hours and 30 minutes to complete the exam. You may also take any one subtest. A period of fifteen additional minutes is provided to fill out a nondisclosure agreement and tutorial. Time taken for breaks is counted as part of the available examination time. By monitoring your progress on the practice tests in this book, you can find your comfort level and approach the testing session with confidence.

FORMAT OF THE CSET: ENGLISH TEST

The CSET: English test is offered only in a computer-based test (CBT) format. The
test consists of multiple-choice questions and two types of constructed-response questions:
extended-response and short-response.

Multiple-choice questions are designed to assess your knowledge of the domains and
related skills reviewed in this book. In general the multiple-choice questions are intended
to make you think logically. In most cases you are expected to demonstrate more than an
ability to recall factual information. You may be asked to think critically about a passage
or excerpt—analyze it, consider it carefully, compare it with other knowledge, or make a
judgment about it.

Multiple-choice questions typically will offer a question or an incomplete statement
that can be answered or completed correctly by only one of four possible choices. You
will choose from among four answers labeled A, B, C, and D.

You should have plenty of time to complete the test, so speed should not be a concern.
However, be aware of how much time you spend on each question; maintaining a steady
pace will ensure that you complete the entire test. Using our timed online practice tests
will help you pace yourself appropriately.

Extended-response questions are scored according to how well the response fulfills
the following performance characteristics:

1. Purpose: addressing the assignment in relation to relevant CSET subject matter
and/or content specifications.

2. Subject matter knowledge: displaying and applying knowledge of subject matter accurately.

3. Support: using appropriate, quality supporting evidence.

4. Depth and breadth of understanding: demonstrating a wide familiarity with and a
deep understanding of the relevant CSET subject matter requirements.

Short-response questions are only scored on the first three performance characteristics
listed above.

Excellent Study Guide

This turned out to be a great purchase. I wasn't sure what to expect from the CSET, so based on the previous reviews I bought this study guide. It's all I used. Basically, it has long chapters on each of the test sections, with many of the terms that you'll need to know. I took a sample test, then read through each of the chapters twice, and then took the second sample test. The tests are very similar to what you'll experience during the actual CSET. I just got back my results for sections I and II (the multiple choice sections) and passed them with flying colors. I'm hoping for the same with the writing sections, but at least I knew what to expect based on this study guide.

Great for subtests 1, 2, and 4. The chapter for subtest 3 needed additional information. Overall, this book is great for reviewing (or learning) the necessary material. However, you may need to find additional resources if you didn't major in English.

In 1991, he wrote the song Jaycee Lee for kidnap victim Jaycee Lee Dugard, whom in 2009 was recovered alive in what has become the most celebrated kidnapping/recovery in modern American history. Williams resides in Reno Nevada with his wife and two children.

As many Amazon customers can attest, Customer Service (CS) is an extremely important component in any purchase, whether it be for a product or service.

Larry Williams has adeptly crafted a book, or more appropriately, a manual that can be use, by rookies and veterans alike, to develop and/or hone a simple but meaningful blue print for providing an effective level of CS that can result in finishing miles ahead of the pack...but you have to actually acquire the book and read it!

Do your customers and your company a solid and read Larry Williams'"Customer Service A to Z". I'm keeping my copy handy to refer to and remind me of what I should be doing as opposed to what I see being done.

Simple but spot on!

We know that over the next year we will be hiring several employees to help us with our business. I have been worried that potential employees would not "get" the customer service standards that we will require of any employee (as well as ourselves). Larry Williams has the answer in his simple, but spot on book. This will be required reading for any new employee... and will be something I will go back to frequently to ensure I am at the top of my game when it comes to how I handle everyday situations with customers and potential customers.
