This is an amazing book, very thorough and interesting from beginning to ...

This is an amazing book, very thorough and interesting from beginning to end. I had just recently finished reading "The Orphan Master's Son" which is an amazing amazing novel about life in North Korea which also has a character in the concentration camps, so although that book was rooted in some fact, it was a novel and I really wanted to read a factual account of someone who had been in the concentration camps in North Korea. This book is eye opening and should be read by every one! Maybe I am biased because I am fascinated by North Korea, but I would highly recommend reading The Orphan Master's Son which is one of the best novels I have ever read and is very much a fantasy, but covers a lot of different aspects of life in different places in North Korea; and then reading The Aquariums of Pyongyang to read about one man's actual experience. I think these books in the reverse order may make the Orphan Master's Son seem a little too far-fetched. I'm rambling now.. read this book! Read both books! Read any other books about the DPRK that you can get your hands on to spread awareness of the human rights atrocities being committed on a daily basis.

North Korea: A Country or The World's Largest Prison Camp!

Chol-Hwan Kang was born to Korean parents of Japanese residency in Pyongyang, North Korea. His family was promised a better life in North Korea. They were lied too. Kang would be raised in forbidden North Korea and imprisoned at nine years old with his family in camp 15.

Kang's memoir of his life in North Korea is moving, haunting, and revealing about the country's holding it's population. Kang describes how life is in his country. With the threat of return to the prison camp, he flees the country and escapes to China and later South Korea.

Upon his life in exile, Kang writes the truth to expose the hardships of North Koreans. The world needs to understand how North Koreans are suffering under the communist regime. The North Koreans are malnourished by food shortages and imprisoned in their country. They are not free by any means. Freedom to North Koreans would be able to speak and live freely without fear.

To understand life in North Korea, Kang gives his unique perspective about his life there. This book is a mind-blowing read if you never read about North Korea before.

Beautifully written account of the horrors of a North Korean concentration camp. Not only do you learn of the personal trials of this young man, but the book contains a summary of how North Korea became North Korea. This is the type of account that needs to come out to expose such a reclusive country and their insane human rights violations.

This account is from a man who did not start out in the North Korean concentration camps, but rather was sent there when he was a young boy. If you're interested in his account, I would also recommend reading "Escape from Camp 14", which is an account from a man born in a North Korean camp.

About the Author
A former Department Chair, and Full Professor of the English Department at the University of Akron, Dr. Diana Reep is on the Editorial Review Board of the _Journal of Business Communication_, and specializes in business and technical communication and film studies. She is the author of several publications, including _The Educator's Writing Handbook_ and _Business and Technical Writing: An Annotated Bibliography of Books from 1880-1980_. Her books of literary criticism are _Margaret Deland and the Rescue and Romance_. This is an excellent book.

I was required to take a technical writing course for my degree and this is the book we used. It did an excellent job of explaining how things should be professionally written. It covers everything from asking for a recommendation to typing a resume to typing a proper e-mail. The layout of the book makes everything very easy to learn. After every concept there are examples of what a proper document should look like and sometimes even an example of what it should not look like. At the time, I thought I would never use anything I was learning, but after only two months out of the class I find myself using it to type up my resume. If you are in a job that requires professionalism in language and writing skills then this book is a must have. You will be surprised at what you can learn.

Excellent book! (not your typical half-baked Thompson/Pearson offering)

I used this book as a student in a technical writing class. The book was EXCELLENT, and served all levels of writers well. It starts with general good writing practices -- outlining, avoiding jargon, writing clearly (especially using proper grammar), being accurate, using parallel construction, writing for mixed audiences, using appropriate style and tone, and using good document design (both logical and format-wise). It moves through intermediate topics -- how to use line drawings and other graphics, writing various types of descriptions (chronological, spatial, and so forth), when to use the various types of definitions, and formatting numbers, measurements, and lists. This continues through advanced concepts -- writing instructions, writing for the web, writing in a group, formal report writing, and giving presentations and oral reports.

Some of the stongest points in this book (besides the no-nonsense writing itself) are:

* "models" (examples of writing) at the end of each chapter,
* "Advice From the Workplace" (excellent articles about workplace writing),
* Appendix A (grammar, puntuation, and mechanics -- including numbers and abbreviations),
* and Appendix B (frequently confused words).

Excellent examples are also part of the text throughout the book.

Sadly, many college students today do *not* have English skills that should be *required* to graduate high school! It's partly due to the large number of non-native English speakers attending college, but mostly it's just poor schooling. This book *does* provide the tools to help college students (who would probably *not pass* a standardized test) to improve their English as well as their writing, if they were given a free pass out of high school. It is up to the *professor* to see that grammar skills are being improved. Sadly, that was not the case in my class -- not at all.

Diana Reep has done all she can to serve both non-native speakers and advanced writers alike. Please, professors, if you buy a book like this, don't waste it by ignoring your students' shorcomings with the English language!

Really Hearing Your Own Language

I bought this book after coming across it in Nicholson Baker's "The Anthologist".I am an amateur poet and Attridge clearly,simply explains why English sounds the way it does.It is very readable with examples and exercises along the way.While not a text book,were I teaching poetry this would would be one of the main books that I'd use.It slows you down,as you should be when either reading or writing poetry.It covers all forms and ages of poetry from Middle English to rap,both rhymed and free verse.I would recommend this book to anyone who reads or writes poetry.

This is absolutely the best book on poetic rhythm I have ever read. You must posess this book if you are, as I am, a student of poetry who wishes to get a feel for how rhythm actually works in English verse. Attridge makes it clear from the start that if you speak English, then you have all the tools you need to understand how rhythm works because you already use those tools whenever you speak. Through numerous examples and exercises you will learn to focus on what you natually do when you read a poem and how it affects the way you understand it. You will find (as I did) that Attridge's distinction between stress verse and sylable stress verse clears up a lot of confusion. There's even a chapter on the rudiments of phrasal anaylsis that will, in my opnion, have you thinking like an expert in no time. I've read the book twice in three weeks I enjoyed it so much. Falling in love with his employer’s daughter Connie was not Roger Denby’s biggest mistake. No, that mistake was giving her a taste of passion. When he rejected Connie, he then had to watch her pursue a gentleman who might be charming her into a snare. Did Roger drive her into that relationship by awakening her desires? All he knows is that he still yearns for Connie. How can he prevent her from ruining herself?

Connie Lockhart knew the walls between her and Roger Denby: She was not yet eighteen. She was the boss’s daughter. She was as far out of his reach as marriage into nobility was out of hers. She thought those walls had tumbled down when he kissed her. Yet he rebuilt them even higher than before and returned to being only her watchdog. Believing their relationship hopeless, Connie pursues a titled gentleman who is no longer out of her reach since her father’s marriage to an earl’s widow. And revenge on the snobbish society darlings seems especially sweet.

Richard Malbury flatters Connie. He seems charmed by her. Marriage to him is preferable to a fruitless love of Roger.

And then Rafe is suspected of murdering a valuable employee, and this Game of Hearts turns more dangerous than Rafe & Maggie and Roger & Connie could have anticipated.

Great Regency read.

This was a wonderful conclusion to this triology. Excellent character development, interesting plot and descriptions which place you in the setting. Could have never guessed the conclusion. While this is the third in a triology, this is also a stand alone novel. It is not necessary to read the previous two books, but it was nice to know the back story. Will be looking for more offerings from this author.
