Deceptively simple, infinitely functional

At first glance, a costume historian would not be impressed by this book's oversimplified patterns and lack of detail. Its renderings of the human figure are cartoonish, and no instructions for esoteric closures and construction are provided.
However, the Holkeboer directed her opus toward the theatrical costumer: an individual who must cobble together a volunteer staff, construct garments for modern bodies, and adapt to quick-changes between scenes. The patterns are necessarily basic; the cuts are nearly authentic; and the suggestions of embellishment design save the costumer much time. This book is not some tome to be displayed on a shelf; it belongs in the studio, its spine creased, its cover dog-eared, and its pages scribbled with measurements and notes. This book is a workhorse. An added bonus is its illustrative use of labels for describing many weird terms, among them: simar, barbette, picadils.
I have found in no other book of scaled patterns but this one, the instructions for THREE methods of enlargement: optical projection, grid method, and radial projection. This book also includes headgear, specialty costumes like kimono, ecclesiastical garb, and a LION! This book also prevides a wonderful equity of both men's and women's clothing which is unfortunately not represented in the body of dramatic literature. (Why are there so few women's roles? But I digress.)
The introduction and final chapter contain essential information on fitting and draping (remember: you must add your own seam allowances) and millinery and corsetry. I'd have given this book another star if I felt that it did justice to constructing corsets -- these items are too complex to build from Holkeboer's 1/8" = 1" scale. But she is absolutely correct in providing undergarment patterns if only to emphasize that they are necessary for achieving a true period look. Also, this book needs either a durable sewn or spiral binding to lie flat for usage. The glued softcover is impractical.
This book cannot function as the only book in a costumer's library; supplement your collection with costume books on period styles to achieve variety in design. As far as PfTC being indispensible to a costume shop, I don't recommend buying a copy of this book; buy TWO!

Great resource for experienced sewers

As the title of the book states, this is more for theater costumers than historic reenactors. However, I've found it to be a good resource. Rather than redraft or enlarge the patterns, I take a basic pattern that is fit to the wearer already (often a commercial pattern) and use this book on how to modify the shape. I like the fact that there are illustrations of the completed garment, along with the patterns.

An invaluable resource.

This book is the most comprehensive, single-volume collection of historical patterns (from Ancient Egypt through 1915) available today for men's and women's costumes. While the pattern designs are very simplistic, present little detail on closures or embellishments and present only general instructions on construction, they are functional and very easy to make, represent nearly authentic cuts and effectively achieve the intended essential look for their specific period.
Each pattern in the book is presented in three sizes, and for each individual piece of a complete garment a label is often attached, giving its historical name and a brief description of its appearance or use. As a bonus, patterns for specialty costumes (fantasy, religious, Chinese, Japanese, and animals), undergarments, hats, wigs and masks are included, and its Introduction explains, in a step-by-step format, costuming techniques such as enlarging patterns, fitting designs, and draping.
This book can also serve, with just a little imagination, as an infinite source of ideas to help you create your own patterns, although you will have to refer to other books on period specific costumes to give your work finishing details like ornaments, trims, and other accessories.
The only weak point of the book is its glued soft-cover binding, which is completely inadequate for the spine-creasing use to which it's sure to be subjected.
If you either work for the theater or just enjoy making your own costumes, you will find this book to be an indispensable part of your library.

Karis is a Pacific Northwest native with a BA in English from Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington, and a few years of postgraduate work in Classics at UW in Seattle. Naturally, this education led to a career as a horseback riding instructor. She has been teaching for over twenty years and has been published in a national equestrian magazine. She lives on a small farm in Washington with a black cat, goats, and a foster horse from a local equine rescue group. She spends most of her free time reading, playing the violin and viola, and riding with friends.

Worth the Read

This story has one of the popular themes for a lesbian romance in that you have one character who has a wounded psyche from her past, and the woman who will save her. In other words, the type of story that I always seem to like despite the fact the theme has been told many times.

Jamie is your seemingly overbearing and commanding businesswoman who is the "Love um and Leave um" type. Her modus operanti is to pick beautiful and willing women up for a few hours of sex. She won't allow herself to fall in love because of the guilt she carries in believing she is responsible for the tragic incident that happened to her young niece. She is the caretaker for the niece and gets her anything money can buy, but can't give her love. Then there is baggage from actions that transpired when she was a teen.

The other main character is Kate, a beautiful equestrian with dreams of competing in show events on a top-flight show horse she wishes to purchase with funding from Jaime's company. Kate has her own baggage in that she was groomed by her parents to be a social climber, and does this very well, fitting in with those that have wealth and prestige. Kate also has a caring and genuinely nice side.

These two do not hit it off, but are attracted to each other. I liled that these two were not between the sheets together until their feelings started to grow. They were still in denial, but the attraction eventually leads to more, but things are not smooth.

Both main characters are depicted very well and came across as authentic. The writing was good and the story flowed. A great book to spend the weekend reading.

Lovely well written romance

Jamie Callahan is a high flying Investment Analyst. She keeps any relationship at arms length. She will never let her heart become involved with anyone. Her niece Anna has everything money can buy, but she has neither love or Jamie's precious time. Any romantic liaison Jamie has is short lived. Love them and leave them is Jamie's attitude.

Kate Brown has grown up pleasing her parents. She puts on many different faces to meet all occasions. Kate's parents are pushing her up the social ladder, maybe beyond what Kate actually wants for herself.

Jamie and Kate meet when Kate applies to Jamie's investment company for funding to buy a superior horse to enter an Olympic event. Jamie finds herself fascinated and attracted to Kate. Which she must ignore at all costs. She has to protect her heart. The more time Jamie and Kate spend together the more difficult it becomes for Jamie to ignore her feelings. Kate herself, is feeling similarly torn by her attraction to Jamie, she knows Jamie is a player, she must also protect her heart.

Both women are vulnerable. They have to decide whether pursuing their path to love is worth the risk to their hearts.

When I read the first book Karis wrote back last year, I wondered how she would be able to top her debut book. Well, she has done it. This is a wonderfully refreshing, well written romance set among the horse world. Always a winning combination for me. This story is far more than a romance though. I don't want to give away any spoilers here, it would not be fair. If you love a good romance with a story to get your teeth in to, this in my opinion will fit the bill.

I think the whole book, including the characters, story and setting is absolutely spot on and perfection. I loved it from start to finish and was really sorry to reach the end. Another one for my re-read shelf. Dare I ask how this one will be topped? I hope we see another Karis Walsh book soon.

Worth buying....

I really enjoyed this book. When I spend my hard earned money I like it to be money well spent and in this case I believe it was. I also bought this authors other book 'Harmony' and that was an excellent read as well.
One of the main charters in Harmony is a viola player and at the end of the book the author, Karis Walsh mentions that she is also a viola player and in 'Worth the Risk'one of the main characters is a horse riding instructor and again at the end of this book the author says that she is also a horse riding instructor....I really hope Karis's next book is not about a serial killer ;-)

About the Author

Mark Edward Soper has been working with PCs since the days of the IBM PC/XT and AT as a salesperson, technology advisor, consultant, experimenter, and technology writer and content creator. Since 1992, he has taught thousands of students across the country how to repair, manage, and troubleshoot the hardware, software, operating systems, and firmware inside their PCs. He has created many versions of his experimental computer known as “FrankenPC” for this and previous books. Mark earned his CompTIA A+ Certification in 1999 and has written five other A+ Certification books covering previous versions of the A+ Certification exams for Pearson imprints. Mark is also the creator of Building and Repairing PCs (Que Video).

Mark has contributed to many editions of Upgrading and Repairing PCs, working on the 11th through 18th and 20th through 22nd editions; co-authored Upgrading and Repairing Networks, Fifth Edition; and has written two books about digital photography, Easy Digital Cameras and The Shot Doctor: The Amateur’s Guide to Taking Great Digital Photos.

Holocaust in the Homeland stirred my soul.

I had no idea that such a horrible riot occurred in Tulsa in 1921, destroying the lives of 10,000 African American residents who had struggled to build the town of Greenwood. Many lost their lives and most all lost their homes and assets. Media hype and jealousy! Sound familiar? Corinda Marsh Pitts used the voice of a fictional character to tell the historical accounting of the event. My heart hurts thinking of the horrible injustice. You won't be disappointed in this book.

The terrible events, detailed and documented by the author, are reminders that jealousy, distrust, and fear become fuel for fires of destruction fanned by greed, opportunism and ignorance. Every page pulls the reader to the next as one witnesses the negative manipulations and media hype pushing for destruction of the community.

amusing and fun are two words to describe how i feel about the first book in The Alistair Chronicles. i just found it too short yet it was still an entertaining read for me.

Alistair's motely crew of a gay fairy, a spider girl and a gentle giant made me laugh with their sassy banter and idiosyncracies. Alistair, the wizard, is no exception. he leads the group and keeps things under control - most of the time. he does his share of tricks as well.

the story spins along pretty fast and it becomes interesting when they rescue an attractive knight from battle. he heals from his wounds but does not remember his name or much about his past. gentle giant Neetor names the lone survivor Bobby and he stays with the group until he is fully recovered. one day, Bobby decides to leave to find out who he is. Alistair is devastated until he could no longer bear it and decides to follow him. naturally, the rest of the group tag along and another adventure awaits them all when they catch up with the handsome knight.

there were a few typos i spotted and i informed the author about them. he gladly received my feedback, fixed the manuscript, then uploaded a corrected version. hats off to you Mr. Leddy, for your professionalism!

aside from the typos, my only other "complaint," as mentioned above, was the story's length. again, Mr. Leddy informed me that the second one is already in progress and he promised that it would be longer this time. good to hear, because i am really looking forward to reading it!

Rise of a Wizard is the author's second publication. The first in the series The Alistair Chronicles, it is a tale of four friends, Alistair, Cedric, Neetor, and Cyndee looking for adventure. There is a definite sibling rivalry vibe between the four that will make you smile. While seeking action, they almost miss it because of their bickering. They come to the aid of a group of knights and vicious battle ensues. They rescue a knight and get more than they bargained for when he joins them.

There is quite a lot packed into these 5 chapters. You get a little history of how each member joins the team, more fighting than I think the team was expecting, and a lot of humor and sass. The characters are all very unique and likeable in their own ways. A terrible flirt of a fairy who emits sparkles when he’s angry, is hard to take serious, even if he’s coming at you with a knife. Love it. You get a taste of Alistair’s world and it leaves you wanting to read the next installment of The Alistair Chronicles.

Keeping Things Hot!:
Short, but loaded with humor.
Great dynamic between the main characters. They’re like a group of siblings, giving each other a hard time, laughing at another’s expense, but will fight to the death to protect the ones they love.
Left you wanting to know more, while frustrating because you want it now, is exactly what a series is designed to do.
There are unexpected plot twists.
The cover looks great and has a pretty amazing font for the title.

Cooling Things Down:
Could use some editing.
Would like to have seen more detail, more background on the characters.

Overall: I give this book an Amazon rating of 4 stars. (Item purchased by me during a free weekend promo) I did enjoy reading this book. I would like to have seen more details and background on the characters and some more editing. That being said, I did laugh and smile a lot with this book, and I look forward to reading the next installment. I do recommend this for a quick read and a laugh or three, although there are some serious moments that let you know it's not all fun and games.

It is the perfect complement

of the book "Revolutionizing Product Development", same authors. The chapters are segmented according to the logic of the previous mentioned book. It is worth mention the chapters about the application of the "Aggregate Project Plan" and "Structuring the Development Funnel". These chapters tell us about the pitfalls and gave some useful proposition on how to solve it. The examples are OK. It could be a bit difficult to undestand how the process works without the previous reference cited before. There is also some "study questions" that suggests that this book is also for training people on Innovation. Very good idea indeed!

Classic on new product development

Don't be turned away by the pub date--this is still the best book out there on the topic of new product development. The development framework that informs the structure of the book and their prescriptions is insightful and elegant. I have used the book for many years as a main text book for my 'management of technology' classes, to both engineering and business students, and most students love the book, especially those with real life experience. It's a great book to introduce engineering students to business/project management issues for the first time, and visa versa. The cases are also very well selected.

I have found this book an excellent starting point to understanding product development cycles, the values of planning, and effective project management. It is the best book that I have read on the topic to date.
