I first read The Social Psychology of Oganizations, by Katz & Kahn, in Spring 1973, as a required reading for Organization Theories Core Course at New York University, Wagner Graduate School Of Public Administration. Based upon my readings and use of this text book for both academic and later business research, I strongly believe that this structurally detailed, powerful and insightful book is a required core, basic studies reading for High School, College, University, Graduate Students and Post Graduate Studies.
The Key Stone to this book is the concept of the Ying, Yang, the polarized interaction,interrelationship(s) of both the Formal and the Informal Organizations within both Public and Private Economy Sector Organizations.
"The formal Goals of the Formal Organization are not necessarily those of the Informal Organization and vice a versa."
This landmark research work by Katz & Kahan, greatly enhances, sensitizes and helps the reader to conceptually organize, catalogue organizations and individuals by both types of organizational hierarchy and types of individuals' characterietics, so that we may more easily deal with both Formal and Informal Organizations and Individuals in a smoother, more rational, less emotional manner.
I teach an Executive Project Managment course in both the Public and Private sectors of the Economy. When teaching Project Management to the US Department of Defense, the US Navy, NAVSEA, I have always recommended the supplemental research use of The Social Psychology of Organizations by Daniel Kats, Robert Louis Kahn, as I do when teaching and consulting within the private sector of the economy.
Katz & Kahan's, The Social Psychology of Organizations, provides the reader with a rich, detailed, structured framework,indeed a structured compartmentalized baseline, against which we can compare multiple types of diversified organizations and multiple types of diversified individuals, as we meet them throughout the lifetime course our public and private lives.
Since a corporation is indeed a Formal Organization, and the corporation is a "Living Entity", then this work allows the reader to understand the diversified (sometimes disfunctional) personalities of the Formal Organization vs. the Informal Organization, corporate culture as they relate to us as the individual having to work and live wihtin their corporate contexts, paramaters and according to their unique set of corporate cultural rules and their respective formal and informal regulations.
From a Psychological perspective, The Social Psychology of Organizations by Katz & Kahan, both fore-warns and fore-arms individuals vis a vis their interactions and inter-relationships with, within large corporations, large social structures and one on one with individuals.
What a true treasure-trove of organizational knowledge, behavior, insights this organizational research really is. This is a timeless piece of organizational research work, as relevent today in 2002, as it was in 1968, 1973 and will be in 2013 and on.

An excellent monograph on social structures. Proven to be a primary resource for my doctoral dissertation. Katz and Kahn provide a precedential resource on the attributes of leadership, impacts of external causal factors on development and health, and key organizational theories which form the foundation on my study. Discussion of open system theory is of particular importance to my research in the area of leadership attributes, development, influences of stress, and the requirements to sustain well-being.

A clear winner!

The Katz and Kahn classic provides readers with an in-depth look at the systems, and modalities prevalent in organizations. It provides a clear map of the impact organizations have on their people, and consequently the impact the people have on the organization. Of particular usefulness were the chapters on power and authority, and role behaviors. While the perfect organization may never exist, Katz and Kahn have gone a long way towards giving their readers a better way of asking the right questions of organizations. Many of their points are germane not only in the era during which it was written, but will become more critical to e-commerce businesses as they realize that there is business to conduct after the initial honeymoon with the product.

One of the two best screenwriting books I've ever read.

If you want a practical, "how to" book that treats the reader with respect and assumes a high level of intelligence this is it. More in depth than other screenwriting books on the market. The other book of quality I would look at is "The Writer's Journey" by Vogler.

it's okay, but there's better books with MUCH more useful information out there. Heck, most of what's in this book can easily be found for free online. If i were you, i'd look there first. I made the mistake of thinking there'd be something in the book that wasn't already online, and there isn't. Still glad i bought the book though, if only to support the author for his time and effort :-)

A hidden gem. Not much theory, just powerful workhorse tools. One technique, the vec or visualized emotional cue, is basically THE technique for creating subtext in a screenplay- youll see it all over professional scripts, and this is the only book ive read that explains it- its worth the price of the whole book.

Interesting introduction to a much larger story - worth a read if you like Sci-Fi

This is a short story introduction to the Star Force series.
It is told from the point of view of a Father and a Son, as they evacuate a space station that is under attack from an alien race.
There is a lot of background in the story that is brushed over, that they have moved around a lot, possibly as refugees, the mother has died at the hands of the aliens, there is a war on, the father once worked for the Space Navy. There are other things as well, that the military is run by Star Force, and that they are very professional and seen as something to be respected.
Of course all of this is only hinted at. Normally this might be a bit frustrating, however, we know that there are 100 volumes coming in the series, so if you have around US$105 to spend, you can buy the series in the 'Origin' series 4 issue bundles and get a lot of these answers.
Overall the writing is pretty good though, the characters were well written, the epic scale of the station etc was well described and the first thing I did when I finished was bought the first volume 1-4 so I could continue, as I thought it well worth the read at this stage.
Everyone be aware - it is a VERY SHORT introduction - page numbers are listed on the amazon page when you buy these things?
But it’s worth the read - as it’s a bit of fun.

Good story, but one very "short" problem.

This could have been so wonderful. And please know that I've read this plus the first 3 episodes. The books are too short. And I mean too short horribly. It almost smacks of someone making them this short to get the purchase on the other episodes, instead of letting their work drive the audience to want to buy them. Make no mistake, the story is good and I could eventually become a fan of the main characters. But when a book is so short that you are not satisfied when it ends, then clearly it has not brought that "episode" to a conclussion. I would much rather pay more for a more complete story and longer book, than feel as though I'm being nickled and dimed just to see where the story goes. I gave it a generous three star rating because I enjoyed the story, but more to the point, I enjoyed the possibility of the story.I hope that this is helpful. Give the prologue a try, see if I'm off base on this.

Very disappointed

I wanted to like this story. It has a great series title and intriguing illustrated cover art. Sadly, there just isn't very much to get excited about. As a prologue, this book is more of a teaser, than a real attempt to tell a story. There isn't anything wrong with a set-up story per se. But even teasers need to have substance to them. It isn't enough to merely 'tease' us with trite background information and world building. We need to have a reason to care about the characters and what's going to unfold. I never reached that point. Heck, I don't even know what the main characters names are besides 'father' and 'son'. Not a very good way to engage a reader.

As a result of this prologue holding back anything that would truly make it an interesting read, I found myself fighting to keep from skimming its contents. This is really disappointing considering the book is only 8 pages long.

Readers who love a really slow-build up, and can put up with having to constantly shell out money for numerous short installments in what appears to be a lengthy sci-fi serial may be interested. Others may want to wait to see if the author puts out an omnibus edition, at which point, even I may give this series another look. But right now, I can't in good conscience, recommend this series.

Love psychology but hate math? Christine has written the perfect book for you. Math has long been the domain of the patriarchy. All those scary numbers and equations. Now your brain can finally relax! I'm hoping she writes a follow up about engineering without math for public educators.

A good book for students who do not like maths

It is a good book with clear illustration of the statistics. It begin with simple statistics and then move on to more difficult analysis. Before I get this book, whenever I pick up a book about statistics, I feel fate. Then I close it immediately after reading 1 to 2 pages, and never pick it up again. However, for this particular book, I've read more than half (about 300 pages)and still want to finish it. After you've read one page, you are eager to read another and another. So, I highly recommend this book to undergradaute and postgraduate students.

About the Author
Grady Hanrahan, PhD, received his doctorate in environmental analytical chemistry from the University of Plymouth, England. Dr. Hanrahan is currently the John Stauffer Endowed Professor of Analytical Chemistry at California Lutheran University with research interests in the use of modern chemometric methods in the design and development of environmental and bioanalytical instrumentation. He is also exploring the use of neural and evolutionary computational techniques for solving complex chemical problems.

Frank A. Gomez, PhD, received his BS in chemistry from California State University, Los Angeles (CSULA), and his PhD in chemistry from UCLA, where he was a NIH Predoctoral Fellow. From 1991–1994, he was a Damon Runyon-Walter Winchell Cancer Research Fund Postdoctoral Fellow in the department of chemistry at Harvard University. He is a professor of chemistry at CSULA and is a visiting associate at Caltech in the Applied Physics department.

excellent resource

As a teacher, I use this magnificent book regularly. Whether I have students guess what the diagram might be or I read information that is accessible and intriguing, this book is one of the best resources I've ever purchased. Each diagram is beautifully and clearly displayed, with a corresponding page devoted to background information as well as a complete overview of the mechanics of the diagram/graphic/art and how it changed the course of mankind. Text is clearly written with historical information knowledgeably relayed, unbiased, and thorough. The 100 diagrams chosen cover the full gamut of time, location and usage, with ideas included that range from universally known to more obscure, but equally compelling ideas. Although a wonderfully scholarly resources, this book can also be picked up and leafed through as a "light" read. Ideas and concepts are so compelling it can serve as both a coffee table book (although this feels a bit sacrilegious) or as a consistently used resource guide and companion.

Great info--good for coffee table

I would give 5 stars if the book were bigger or had bigger type. The font size is small. Luckily, my 76-year-old uncle, who is an artist and draftsman, has 20-20 vision. He was thrilled with it. It's essentially an easy read--a one-page explanation per diagram with one page for each diagram. I found it extremely interesting and educational and so did he. Great gift for a history buff or someone like my uncle who has drawing talent and/or a drafting or construction background.

I found the book interesting. My one criticism is that many of the diagrams were diagrams that recorded the fact that the World had changed, rather than being instruments of change, themselves.
