Relatively Impartial Look at the Issue

A friend recommended this to me. I'd never heard of the issues surrounding the NPP, but I found this book took a relatively impartial view and covered the various debates rather well.

Concise and immensely helpful

Before reading anything else on The New Perspective, one should read Yinger's book. The terminology and core issues are laid out well. He also does a great job of bringing up the major objections to consider. One piece of advice: approach this subject trying to see whatthe Scriptures actually teach and not trying to defend any position (reformation or otherwise).

A great primer on the New Perspective on Paul and related pushback

I very much appreciate Yinger's brief overview and analysis of the biblical-theological phenomenon known as "the New Perspective on Paul." He presents a concise history of its emergence from the work of Sanders (who really gave us "the New Perspective on Second Temple Judaism" with an appendix on Paul :) ) to the work of Dunn, Wright, and a few select others. The larger part of the book works through major criticisms of the New Perspective and assesses these against the answers provided by proponents of the same and against the evidence of Pauline material itself. He concludes with a balanced assessment of where the NPP has exceeded the evidence and where we can learn from what the proponents of the NPP have brought forward. The book closes with brief afterwords by Donald Hagner and Don Garlington -- a critic and proponent of the NPP, respectively, for an added measure of balance. This is a perfect companion text for an introduction to the New Testament, or a perfect first read on the topic for the interested student of Paul and Pauline studies.

Excellent book with information helpful for any relationship. Straight forward, easy to understand concepts that can be applied immediately to improve conflict -ridden communication. The author gives interesting examples which help to illustrate the concepts. Ideal, both for couples who have been together for years, as well as newly-weds, this well-written book offers rich wisdom for improving our most significant relationships. The author's easy to read style is embedded with humorous touches. This unique perspective offers hope and optimism for couples locked in dysfunctional communication and conflict. It also offers solid principles for those with good marriages who want to make them even better. Definitely a must-read for anyone wanting to improve their significant relationships.

I never review anything

I purchase beauty products, household goods and audio books from Amazon nearly daily. I think I've written one review in my life; nothing is great enough to warrant the time it takes to provide feedback.
Thia book, however, is worth sharing and telling people to read/listen. From a relationship/self development/communication standpoint, it's unique for a number of key reasons: 1. Practical application and a process. Although not first nature to do much of what he teaches, he tells you what to do, how to do it and why. 2. It doesn't have a gender bias. Too often these books are authored and told from one perspective. Worst yet, the basis of their insight is on sweeping generalizations of one of both genders. "Women today are bossy and controlling." "Men and are lazy, inconsiderate and useless." Emil's ideas go beyond that. He doesn't need to generalize how one partner is in order to get your buy in on his ideas.
3. Lastly, it's benefit goes beyond marriage and relationships. It's about communicating with respect, understanding and thoughtfulness to avoid conflict in all relationships.
Really, really great read!
I love that he's the audible voice too! It adds an authenticity, a live seminar feel to the reading.

CD of Great Gatsby arrived today, and was within the delivery window given by the seller. However, when I opened the package, instead of finding the CD of The Great Gatsby narrated by Frank Muller, I instead found a CD of TGG narrated by Alexander Scoursby. I checked this page to see if I had made a mistake. Nope. Descriptin clearly states that the audiobbok was narrated by Frank Muller. This is not what I ordered. This is not what I paid for. A word of caution. If you're ordering from Bookworm services, double check your order.. You're probably being cheated.

Meats, side dishes, vegetables, appetizers, desserts are all here. The recipes are truly fast and fresh. Illustrated throughout with photos, this cookbook has unique split pages which allow you to see 3 recipes at once to cook simultaneously in the 3 levels of the stack cooker. Instructions for cooking each dish individually are included with each recipe. Spiral binding means the book will stay open on the kitchen counter.

I purchased this to go with the stack system I got my daughter for a christmas gift. It would help her learn how to use it better and more efficiently. I have the set, and it helped me to use it. It also includes some delightful recipes.

Good Explaination Of LINQ Technology

Compared to most .Net developers I am a relative novice. I don't develop in .Net full time. I'm a Java developer by day and do some consulting in .Net on nights and weekends. My experiences with .Net so far have been some basic ASP.Net web sites with SQL Server as the back end database. Most of my experience has been with Visual Studio 2008. I wanted to review this book to assist me in coming up to speed in LINQ and Visual Studio 2008. I started this will little or no exposure to LINQ. I just knew that it was a new programming tool from Microsoft to make accessing databases easier for the .Net developer. My goal from reading this book was to walk away with basic knowledge of using LINQ. Now having read the book and done the exercises that are included in it, I can say that I do have a basic understanding of how to use LINQ. I liked the fact that the author, Joe Mayo, chose to include exercises for the reader to do along with reading his book. I'm of the school that learns by doing, not by simply reading about new technologies, so this was very helpful for me in terms of understanding the concepts the author was discussing.

I got through all of the exercises except one that I had trouble with. I emailed the author about my troubles and he responded the same day and informed me that I needed to install Visual Studio 2008 service pack two to get the new functionality that I need for the exercise. I thought it was very nice of him to get back to me so quickly! I did have some trouble due to my lack of experience with some of the more advanced features of the C# programming language, (partial classes and partial methods, Lambda expressions etc). None of these issues were show stoppers in getting through the material in the book.

I was very impressed with the LINQ technology. You can just drag and drop a table from your database onto the page in Visual Studio and it builds a great deal of code for you. It builds the code that you will use to insert and update your data in that table. Very impressive! Microsoft has come a long way in terms of making a developer's job easier.

I had a really hard time with the syntax that LINQ uses. I'm an old Oracle developer and it took me a while to get used to this SQL server way of writing queries, but LINQ queries look entirely different than what I'm used to and it is not intuitive to me.

I'm used to:
SELECT first_name
FROM Users WHERE last_name = `Jones'

The same query in LINQ is something like:
FirstNames =
FROM names in Users
WHERE last_name = `Jones'
SELECT first_name

I'm having a really hard time with this new syntax but I will get used to it as I get more experience and it has nothing to do with the book or the author, it has to do with the technology of LINQ.

I thought the book was well written and well organized. It's obvious to me the Mr. Mayo has a great deal of knowledge and experience with LINQ and .Net development in general and it shows in his book. I think this is a good book for experienced .Net developers. I think I would have gotten more out of the book if I had a little more .Net programming experience. This is not a book for a beginner in .Net, Visual Studio 2008, or Database development. There are other beginner level books more specific to those topics where beginners should go.

This book covers just about anything you'd want to know about LINQ. The examples given are really useful. As a reader you have the option of just reading the first part of each chapter which covers a particular aspect of LINQ or diving in deep in by examining what happens at the CLR level (covered in the latter part of each chapter). LINQ to Objects, LINQ to XML and LINQ to SQL are all presented but the author goes further showing how to extend LINQ for your own custom needs. It is comprehensive enough to keep as a reference, so I got the Kindle version in order to keep it nearby at work.

I feel I've been cheated

With only 16 lines per page and 120 pages (+introduction etc) this thing should really be an article, not a book. Since there are not much text, of couse the book reads fast, but you don't get much information either. The amount of useful information you get (as opposed to a lot of common knowlengde) would probably have fitted into three normal letter-sized pages. This boils down to: I think the author had a few tricks he would write a book on, then he added a lot of common knowlendge, and then enlarged the font to get a book. My opinion: Not at all worth the money, I feel I've been cheated. I've never been so disappointed after receiving a book.

Should Be an Article

I agree with "A Reader from Oslo." I have never seen a book with such large type (the capital letters in sentences are around 5/16" tall!!!) and empty space (around 1/4" between lines!!!). I can stand four feet away and still easily read the pages.
I actually looked to see if somehow I received a special edition for persons who are visually impaired. Nope.

How many times can an author rate his own book?

Looks like he has two ratings under his own name and then several others from "a reader" which have many suspicious consistencies. Interesting, and I almost bought this book.
