An important book
By Jo Brown
This is a practical book for kids and their parents about how to manage anxiety.
I loved the relaxed and anecdotal style. It felt like someone I liked and trusted giving me gossipy common-sense with a highly professional underlay. The 'house style' felt like one person speaking from years of experience. A triumph of family enterprise!
I liked the dragon v the sun dialogue. It has the ring of truth about it for me. I think the voice of the dragon always has a threatening sneer in it! That's how I have come to recognise "the dragon" for myself!
The reason and light of the voice of "the sun" is, for me, the voice of the Good Shepherd!
For me, as an interested adult who is alongside children/teens from time to time, there was in depth of information on the history and chemistry of anxiety that was useful to know was there so I could access it if I ever needed to but I was able to skip the details and go to the next bit without feeling I'd missed some vital information.
I loved the advice on the journal and could see this have a very practical application for lots of people and situations.... I intermittently keep a journal of thoughts myself so I'm encouraged!
TACFK is clearly written for an American readership and that's totally cool..... but I would comment that it has application in any culture though a 'First World' culture would find TACFK familiar.
Thinking about this last point a bit more I can see that this particular section around page 212 is speaking to the "Western" obsession with H&S/blame which is reaching almost epidemic proportions here in the UK too! (Some want to blame the recent floods in the UK on someone; this is clearly silly! Or maybe it's media driven?)
One of my measures of a "really good book" is that I finish and immediately want to give it away... so I have firmly written my name in the front so I will buy another to give away. I want to hold onto this one as I think it's an important book. In my experience lending books just becomes frustrating as they never - or very rarely - return! So much better to give a book away!

Sound Advice That is in Agreement with my Own Therapist
By mommysarah713
Our family has been coping with some tragedy this year. My husband and I have both realized that anxiety and depression are influential in our lives and compounding are difficulties. Some of our children are exhibiting signs that they have inherited these burdens and so I turned to The Anxiety Cure for Kids. It has been a great help in understanding our children and helping them on a level they can cope with. It has even provided me with some skills for dealing with my own anxiety. My only complaint is the exercises of note booking and such. I realize the importance of these practices and that it is my own laziness and depression holding me back from enjoying these parts of the book. I was just hoping I could click my heels together and all would be well.

I recommend this book to everyone who asks what we tried
By wuzaroosunprairie
This book plus therapy was instrumental in helping our 6 year old deal with her GAD. The dragon and wizard filled in the blanks where therapy left off, and helped the lightbulb moment happen for us. I recommend this book to everyone who asks what we tried!
