if you're coming from a research background...
By jb
I was less impressed with this book than most other reviewers. I am used to excellent research methods textbooks in medicine, with which I compared this book. Chapter 3 is an excellent one to show its relative weakness. The distinction between "descriptive" and "experimental" research alternates incoherently between the latter being the "only" way to assess causal associations, to a "better" way to assess causal associations. Can one make causal statements based on "descriptive" research? Either clearly "no," or "not as easily as experimental research," take your pick authors. Discussions about this are referenced (but not discussed) in the text -- so go do your own reading, "we're not going to tell you here." For example, the question of whether or not one can say that exposure to very loud sounds can ultimately lead to (or cause) hearing loss is known from "descriptive studies." Similarly, we know that smoking causes lung cancer from "descriptive studies," i.e., we don't assign people to smoke or not smoke and then see who gets cancer. Yet we can still make causal statement about smoking and lung cancer (I can, can you? The authors say you can't... I think). The authors don't discuss this type of controversy carefully, but imply that they have; very annoying. Overall, the careful reader starts to recognize a book that often reads like a patchwork quilt of ideas and references taken from other sources that are sewn together in a relatively cheap manner (basic questions are not addressed or are addressed in conflicting / ambiguous ways). Much better discussions of study design and causality can be found in other textbooks -- don't let your interest in speech and language pathology limit you to this textbook -- it may have a niche in this narrow field of research, but not in research study design as a whole. In this latter regard (which is the focus of the book), this book is inferior. Given the multitude of carefully written research textbooks out there, many of which were published decades ago, I was unpleasantly suprised, to say the least.

Very informative, but boring
By W. Wilson
This book is really wordy and difficult to read because it is really dry. The only positive aspect of the book is the research articles that are recommended at the end of each chapter. They really help to pull all the points of the chapter together.
