About the Author
Kathy Schwalbe, Ph.D., PMP, is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Business Administration at Augsburg College in Minneapolis, where she primarily taught courses in project management and problem solving for business. Kathy’s first job out of college was as a project manager/officer in the Air Force. She worked for 10 years in industry (Air Force, Boeing, and Clark Oil) before entering academia in 1991. Kathy is an active member of PMI. Kathy earned her Ph.D. in Higher Education at the University of Minnesota, her MBA at Northeastern University’s High Technology MBA program, and her B.S. in mathematics at the University of Notre Dame. She was named Educator of the Year in 2011 by the Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP) Education Special Interest Group (EDSIG). Dan Furlong, PMP, FHIMSS, CPHIMS manages the Project Management Office for the Medical University of South Carolina and also teaches healthcare project management and healthcare technology in their Master in Health Administration program. Dan has served on advisory councils for multiple universities initiating or undergoing accreditation for project management programs. He has been an active member of the PMI Charleston chapter, serving on the board for the past ten years in a variety of roles including VP Professional Development, VP Marketing & Public Relations, VP Community Outreach, President, and Chairman. Dan is a graduate of the PMI Leadership Institute Master Class, a year-long development program offered by PMI to select chapter leaders worldwide. Dan has served on the board of the South Carolina HIMSS chapter and has been a frequent speaker at state and national HIMSS conferences. He was recently named a HIMSS Fellow (FHIMSS) for his contributions to HIMSS and the industry. Dan has hosted multiple 8-hour project management workshops during the HIMSS pre-symposia, and has presented at many other regional, national and international conferences. He has also served on the board or as a board advisor to SC.GMIS, a statewide government technology professional organization, since 2003. He earned his undergraduate degree in Computer Science at the College of Charleston, his MBA at The Citadel, and is currently working on his dissertation for his Doctorate in Health Administration from the Medical University of South Carolina.

Would make an excellent textbook for a course on healthcare PM

• A lot of "meat" on every page
• Complete textbook that would be a treat to teach from
• Superb references/multimedia links/applicable statistics and quotes
• Like the cartoons (although some were a little hard to read without my reading glasses)
• It's full of real-life examples/templates and top-notch charts & graphics
• Nice blend of covering all "traditional" PM concepts while making sure to discuss unique characteristics of the healthcare environment
• Shows a lot of hard work - just creating all the realistic documentation for the fictional VAPR project is impressive
• Overall fantastic ! Authors did a great job with an ambitious (and groundbreaking) objective

(Only drawback is it seems darned expensive for a relatively inexpensive paperback binding)

If you are looking for a healthcare project management textbook, this is the text for you. If you are familiar with other Schwable project management texts, the transition will be smooth. We are using the text to teach a healthcare project management course and the response from the students has been great. Very easy to understand, challenging enough (from a student perspective) and overall I highly recommend. Great text for a very important and growing field of opportunity.

About the Author
Percy Whitlock was born in Chatham, Kent, and studied composition at the Royal College of Music with Stanford and Vaughan Williams, and organ with Henry Ley. Rather than fight the tide, he embraced the nickname and reissued the book. How We Live is a fascinating examination of the machinery of life. Dr. Nuland begins his meditation with a hair-raising account of a medical emergency that nearly ends in disaster: a 40-year-old woman almost bleeds to death on the operating table as he and other doctors struggle frantically to find the source of the hemorrhage. Eventually, Dr. Nuland and his team are able to locate the cause--a rare aneurysm of the splenic artery--and repair it. The patient survives. How We Live, Dr. Nuland tells us, grew out of the experiences of that night and his certainty that Marge Hanson lived because of her own will and the surgical team's will not to let her die. So doing, he also pursues nothing less than the human spirit, which impels many persons' most admirable activities, although they may have little or nothing to do with survival. Nuland glories in the developments that brought Homo sapiens to the present stage. He considers body systems and human processes, dealing with each historically and scientifically and then bringing it to life in a detailed patient history--and the word patient, not the usual case, is apt here, for Nuland--his own patients are fortunate indeed in having him as their physician--sees living, feeling persons, not diseases, and treats them accordingly (gentleness, he points out, is necessary in dealing not only with the patient but also with himself as physician). The body, Nuland sums up, achieves its stability through being unstable. This book, a prizewinner whether or not it actually wins one, conveys much information, discusses philosophical and social questions open-mindedly, and delights us withal, thanks to Nuland's dry sense of humor. Body Mechanics

I bought this book under the title "Wisdom of the Body". Because it was written after "How We Die", which won a National Book Award, it was changed from "Wisdom of the Body" to "How We Live" because so many reviewers nicknamed it that. Dr. Nuland is one of the best writer's I have come across concerning the function of the human body. He writes with such clarity and interweaves his stories with wonderful references to the history of medicine. I think everyone that has the least bit of interest in how their body works should read his books. You don't have to have a medical background to understand his writing, but if you do have a medical background, he helps you see things even more clearly. These books are especially meaningful for anyone who has an aging parent suffering from certain illnesses. It will give you an understanding and a peace that you might not find elsewhere.

An outstanding book

Dr. Nuland has written a well constructed book that leads the reader through a bit of anatomy, together with helpful discussions of the Greek and Latin words behind the anatomical names. However, the main focus is on how the body strives to maintain health and how the emergent phenomena of 'Human Spirit' plays into that maintenance. Contrary to the impressions from earlier reviewers, I found this book to be extremely well written, and carefully constructed so that the reader is exposed to the nature of the material in a well ordered way. I loved his writing style, I loved the emotion behind the stories he told, and I appreciate his struggles with how the human spirit could emerge from the chaos of evolution. I highly recommend this book.

It's Great!!!

How We Live, by Sherwin B. Nunland, is an intriguing, well-written book worthy of a five-star review. The 364-page book is beautifully written, with excellent descriptions and powerful stories. In addition to scientifically accurate descriptions of each body system, How We Live relates the structure of each part of the body to the function of a human being as a whole. This book is truly the work of an excellent author.

The first chapter, "The Will to Live", is a story of just that - a woman who requires immediate emergency surgery top treat a desperate condition. The descriptions in this chapter are vivid and graphic - including detailed accounts of the surgery itself. Spurting blood, ruptured organs, and jerking muscle are described so intensely it is easy to imagine what the scene described would look like. In fact, this chapter is so well-written, I advise anyone with a weak stomach to skip it!

The second chapter provides many accurate descriptions of the body and how it works - everything from blood and capillaries to the differences between voluntary and involuntary muscle. The circulatory system is described in such detail that it is easy to forget this is a scientific book! The body and its structures are described as wonders of nature. The third chapter goes into a story of breast cancer and gets more deeply into the endocrine system. There is, in this chapter, an interesting description of a cancerous breast and the procedure done to remove it. The fourth chapter deals with the nervous system, and provides several helpful illustrations to help the reader understand somewhat challenging information. The fifth chapter details the cell, and the sixth and seventh chapters discuss sexuality and the reproductive process. The book goes on the discuss birth, the heart, the digestive system, and the brain. These chapters add up to a scientifically accurate, yet interesting book.

How We Live is different from most other science books in that it isn't dry or confusing. It combines accurate information with heart-warming stories and is fun to read. The information is surprisingly easy to understand and the book is interesting enough to contend with fiction novels. This is a must read!

Purchased for a masters program course in Strategic Management of Technology. The course covered the entire book. The cases were nice lead-ins for the chapters however it would be nice if the book were had more relevant examples and profiles. Since this is the 4th edition, some things are updated, but most graphs dated around 2012 or earlier and not much, if any, from 2013 or later. The concepts are still relevant however and it would be a great supplement to more current cases or coursework.

In An Artist of the Floating World, Kazuo Ishiguro offers readers of the English language an authentic look at postwar Japan, "a floating world" of changing cultural behaviors, shifting societal patterns and troubling questions. Ishiguro, who was born in Nagasaki in 1954 but moved to England in 1960, writes the story of Masuji Ono, a bohemian artist and purveyor of the night life who became a propagandist for Japanese imperialism during the war. But the war is over. Japan lost, Ono's wife and son have been killed, and many young people blame the imperialists for leading the country to disaster. What's left for Ono? Ishiguro's treatment of this story earned a 1986 Whitbread Prize.

Like figures on a Japanese screen, the painter Masuji Ono and his daughters Setsuko and Noriko are fixed in the formal attitudes that even their private conversations reflect. In the postwar 1940, the father is a relic of traditional Japan, of teahouses, geishas and patterned gardens not yet destroyed by industry and Westernized thinking. He is unable to communicate with his daughters, unsure of the propriety of his wartime nationalism yet unwilling to exchange it for what seem to him doubtful modern values. It is postwar Japan and a now retired and seemingly discredited painter, Sensei Ono, reflects on his career, the limits to loyalties between teachers and students, and the life of art. Occasions such as the forthcoming engagement of his daughter (which involves investigations into the family background) bring his involvement with the political campaigns of the prewar regime painfully to the fore of his consciousness. Should he have remained a traditional painter of the floating world of geishas, tea houses, and such? Do his high-minded intentions excuse his propaganda posters? Should an artist follow an aesthetic of pure art or of social involvement? How does a personor a societycome to terms with mistakes of the past? Warm-up for "The Remains of the Day"

In his ambitious youth, a now older man made a commitment to an idealistic cause, which for a time brought him acclaim and power in his field. But in his maturity, this man realizes that his youthful cause had a disastrous effect on his family life. Furthermore, he sees that his youthful ideals are no longer respected by the rising generation. This mature man does not regret or forsake his ambitious nature. But he does ultimately see that his idealism and ambitions combined to support what history has shown to be a misguided failure.

This plot summary applies to Ishiguro's impressive second novel, AN ARTIST OF THE FLOATING WORLD. There, Masuji Ono, a master painter, develops and uses his talents to support imperialistic Japan. And, it applies to THE REMAINS OF THE DAY, Ishiguro's terrific third novel, where Stevens, a dedicated butler, provides great service to a disgraced aristocratic household. IMHO, AAotFW is a good novel. But it also reads like a warm-up for TRotD.

In AAotFW, the talented Ono is initially schooled as an artist of the floating world. This is "the night-time world of pleasure, entertainment, and drink which formed the backdrop for all our paintings." It offers "...the finest, most fragile beauty an artist can hope to capture..." But the youthful and idealistic Ono, shocked by poverty in his native city, allows politics to enter his painting. Ultimately, this becomes both the reason for his early prominence and later problems.

Ishiguro organizes AAotFW into four sections: October 1948; April 1949; November 1949; and June 1950. In each section, he uses the dilemma of Noriko, Ono's initially unmarried daughter, to explore and layer the issues of Ono's life, which include artistic integrity, fame and authority, misguided idealism and ambition, guilt and responsibility, and the disappearance and reformulation of the past. In all four sections, Noriko's situation evolves with time. Meanwhile, Ono's concerns become increasingly nuanced and layered. Ultimately, he recognizes that what he once viewed as a highpoint in his professional life--the moment he surpassed his former teacher and father figure--was also his moment of classic hubris.

This is a good novel, albeit not quite as focused as TRotD. Regardless, rounded up to five stars and recommended.

No Happy Endings Here

Thirty years between writing his latest novel "The Buried Giant" and "An Artist of the Floating World". After reading "The Buried Giant" and most of his other works, I stumbled upon "An Artist of the Floating World" and thought I'd give it a try and I'm glad I did but my final feelings were quite mixed. It almost seems as if the two works were written in reverse order. "An Artist of the Floating World" seems as if it was written by an older man , someone close to Ishiguro's age and "The Buried Giant" by a much younger writer. Both books are somewhat melancholy in style and tone, not what I'd call "uplifting" or optimistic and both are beautifully executed in Ishiguro's own inimitable style. 'The Buried Giant" might have been written by an English author but "An Artist of the Floating World" could only have been written by someone Japanese. All of Ishiguro's works should be read at least twice for full effect.

Having read his marvelous 'the remains of the day', I thought to read another of his writings.
In reading 'the remains of.....', i was awed by his convincing portral of
the butler's sense of his place in the world of the priviledged.
Whereas, in the 'an artist of .....', I continually sensed that his efforts to portray the artist's perception of his world,
wrecked by the horrors of wwII, were awkward and forced......in his characters attempt to understand
the new ethical standards he now encountered.

But, I do however recommend both books. Especially, 'the remains of the day.'

About the Author
Lisa A. Keister is a professor of sociology and the Director of the Markets and Management Program at Duke University. She conducts research on wealth inequality, asset accumulation and the causes of each. She is the author of Getting Rich: America's New Rich and How They Got There (Cambridge University Press, 2005) and Wealth in America (Cambridge University Press, 2000). Her research on Chinese corporations and the country's economic transition appeared in her book Chinese Business Groups (2000) as well as various articles.

Darby E. Southgate is an assistant professor of sociology at Los Angeles Valley College and a research consultant. Her primary research interests are poverty, education and culture. Her research investigates the intersection of socioeconomic status, education and culture. She has authored numerous entries on culture, specifically on music and society. She also consults for agencies aiming to reduce homelessness and poverty through education.

I got this book for a course I was taking and it is great. A lot of sociology are difficult to read but this is definitely an easy and interesting one.
