Once Removed: Poems, by Elizabeth Bradfield

Set mostly on or off the coast of Cape Cod, poet-naturalist Elizabeth Bradfield continues her ongoing exploration of humans in their natural habitat―and, at times, at odds with it.

Known for her poetic portrayals of polar expeditions throughout the ages, Elizabeth Bradfield explores environments remote and local, ecological and interior, in these enthralling new poems. Whether afloat on the Amazon or wandering her home turf of Cape Cod, Bradfield connects her natural surroundings with the most essential of human longings.

Reading this book I felt like I was in the presence of an old soul
By KALI LIGHTFOOT
Bradfield's poems are very accessible to the mind, but their real work is in the heart.
"We are, by vast percentage, sea.
The eye can stand to be open only through tears."
Reading this book I felt like I was in the presence of an old soul. She has a finely developed ability to connect natural science with thoughts of human love and loss...and lust...dealt with in beautiful language and often a wry humor. The poems are written in a number of forms, each seeming perfect to the topic, and the variety enhances the book. I highly recommend this read.

Stellar Collection, A Must Read
By Truck Lover
This book's gorgeous cover image is a good indicator of what's to come inside--shimmering poems about water, light, the human form, and so much more. From the tender, sharp and sexy opening poem, "We All Want To See A Mammal" (which appeared in the New Yorker) to the heart-in-my-throat ending poem, "Getting Out" (as far from NY as one can be), this collection covers an admirable range of style, tone, form, setting, diction, and feeling. But there's no sense of variety for variety's sake, or the pastiche feel of trying too hard to be virtuosic. These poems are united, despite their variety, by the poet's persistent, empathetic, imaginative stance, animated by a word she's used to describe it: wonderment. Bradfield is a favorite poet of mine but you sure don't need any preexisting experience to appreciate these poems for what they are: thoughtful and surprising investigations of what it means to be a human in this present world, which means to be a creature in a home.
Highly recommended for contemporary poetry readers, and anyone else who has a hankering for a collection to sink your teeth into.

Elizabeth Bradfield continues to write imagery that sticks with this non-poet for a long time after I've put the collection away.
