From Booklist
For teens embarking on or dreaming of their own all-encompassing, meant-to-be first love, this romantic and history-tinged adventure will make them swoon. Calliope, 16, is set for another summer interning for her uncle Harry’s antique-book business in glamorous Manhattan. When Harry is asked to appraise an illuminated manuscript that is actually a palimpsest, Callie is paired with August, the son of a brilliant antiquarian, to investigate the history of the book. Together, the two trace the dramatic provenance of the book, discover the ill-fated love story of Heloise and Abelard hidden within the pages, and fall in love. Callie and August are a likable pair, both struggling realistically with family secrets in their past, and they have a palpable attraction to each other that is kept relatively chaste. A clandestine trip to Paris (in separate beds), dreams in which Heloise and Abelard reveal secrets to Callie and August, and a super-romantic culmination reuniting lost loves cap this thoroughly enjoyable romantic mystery. Grades 7-10. --Heather Booth

Okay romance
By Jessica (Peace Love Books)
I was SO excited to read this book because the cover is gorgeous and the premise sounded great, but I just could not connect with the story. I felt like everything was rushed and too perfect; it was not realistic or engaging in any way.

I really liked the idea of August and Calliope hunting for the history of a mysterious book that could be connected to star-crossed lovers Heloise and Abelard. It just seemed so forced! Calliope and August new each other for like five minutes and decided they loved each other. I know there are times when people may like each other from seeing each other, but falling in love and being all over each other? Not very realistic. Calliope's life seemed oh-so-perfect with her 4.0 GPA, money, beauty, and charm that it just got annoying. Sure she had daddy issues, but she did whatever she wanted and got away with it.

Everything that happened seemed too easy and the ending was just too perfect. Also, the book belonged to Astrolabe and quotes from him began every chapter, but we didn't figure out his love life and story until the last couple of pages. I thought the quotes had nothing to do with the story until then, so they just annoyed me at the beginning of each chapter. This was supposed to be a "great love story" like Romeo and Juliet, but this was no where near that romance.

Illuminated held so much potential, but it just fell flat. The author seemed to take the easy, cliched way out instead of really making something original and romantic. If you still feel like reading this, you should definitely wait to get it from the library; you probably won't want to read it more than once.

Callie and August = Bella and Edward
By Bookworm
Illuminated by Erica Drloff is a story about a girl named Callie and a boy named August who go on a search to find out who is the mysterious A who's entries were hidden in an old book.

OK I have to say it was the book's cover that first drew me in and then it was the book's description that got me interested in reading this book and for a while it kept my interest until the main characters Callie and August seemed like copies of Bella Swan and Edward Cullen. They just got too perfect and the plot ended up a happily ever after.

Sure there were no vampires or werewolves but...

Callie to me was just another Bella:

Ex. 1 She had parent issues
Ex. 2 She described her looks as making her look almost adult (which I think means plain Jane)
Ex. 3 She falls for August in the first few minutes she's in his company

August to me was just another Edward:

Ex. 1 He's described as hot
Ex. 2 He falls for Callie in the first few minutes he's in her company

And the plot like I said ended up a happily ever after.

However, while I was reading I found myself confused at times and while I can't remember all the things I found confusing I do remember one thing that I found confusing and contradicting

Ex. In the ending, Callie asks her Uncle Harry what was in his letter and her uncle tells her it's a pledge to Gabe because Harry misses him even after all these years. Was I the only one who thought that after reading Harry's answer I thought Gabe had died? But of course Gabe didn't die he showed up two pages later.

So I don't understand why Harry answered the way he did because to me, it sounded like Gabe had died when he really hadn't. But I could be missing something. It has been awhile since I reread this.

I give this book three stars.

Great Read!
By kindlemom1 (My Guilty Obsession)
I love tragic tales of star crossed lovers like Romeo and Juliet, Tristan and Isolde so I knew this was something that I wanted to read and if that wasn't alluring enough, the gorgeous cover made it a shoe in for something that I just knew I had to read.

I am going to admit that I had really high expectations for this book so I was a little leery about reading it, I mean, I really hate it when I am excited about a book and then it turns out to be a huge let down.
Thankfully, while this story wasn't quite all I hoped it would be, it was still a fantastic read and I was very happy with it.

I loved Callie from the start. She is smart and independent and just likeable. She is one of those people that you would love to have as a friend because she is loyal and trustworthy and you know she would be there when you need her rain or shine.

Her uncle is fantastic and such a great secondary character that you can't help wishing you had an uncle just like him. I am a huge history lover as well so his job of finding and investigating ancient books and text just sounded fascinating to me and something I would love.

And then we get to meet the delicious August. He is smart and sexy and so so kind that you can't help loving him as well and rooting for him and Callie to be together.

I loved the mystery behind the illuminated pages they find (something I found so fun to read about!)and the real history of the story of Heloise and Peter Abelard, which I am ashamed to admit I have never read about before. True star crossed lovers and their tragic love story.

This whole book was a whirl wind adventure filled with mystery and intrigue and sweet romance and passion with a slight paranormal element that will leave you wanting more.

I had so much fun reading and learning about Heloise and Abelard and their child and watching Callie and August discover each other along the way that I really do think this will be a story that a lot of people will really enjoy and love, especially those with a love of history and star crossed lovers like I have.
